How to Improve Google Ranking Via Google Keywords

By Veronica Tan B.K.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself on the 1st page of the Google search engine with my keyword “online MLM lead”. I was not only listed no. 1 & no. 2 on the 1st page of Google but then again at no. 4, no. 6 & no 9 for that same keyword, a total of five times on the very first page of the Google organic (non-paid) searches. How did I improve Google ranking for this keyword phrase? Mainly through researching on the various Google search keywords and employing keyword optimization techniques.

Boy was I terribly excited! I had two articles and one YouTube video publicizing a screenshot of myself on that page where everyone who was searching for that particular keyword would be taken to. It is a huge advertisement, all for free.

Just researching on the top search word alone or on keyword popularity is not sufficient in getting you to rank high on Google. To effectively optimize your keywords, you need to know which keywords you want to concentrate on. How do you know which are the top Google search keywords and which should you pick?

To assist you in researching on the top search words, it is best to use some keywords tool such as Wordtracker or Adwords analyzer. These tools will give you a list of keyword suggestions based on the keyword you input. Or you can also use the free keyword search tool like Google’s very own freeadwordstool.com.

Tools such as Wordtracker and AdWords analyzer allow you to perform keyword analyzer functions. After you have identified your top search words, in order to improve Google ranking, you would need to find out how many competing websites there are for that particular keyword you are targeting. This can be easily done with the keyword analyzer tools such as Wordtracker and AdWords analyzer. However these are two paid sites and if you do not wish to pay for the service, you can just check out the number of competing websites there are on Google. Doing it this way is of course more tedious and time consuming.

What you are on the lookout for are keywords that have high popularity and fewer competing websites. For a beginner, this is the first step for keyword optimization. If you are using the freeadwordstool.com site, you would want to go for keywords that have a minimum of 600 searches initially. At the same time, you would pick out those keywords which have less than 50,000 competitors. You can check on this by keying in your chosen keyword in Google.com with an exact match, i.e. with the keyword enclosed in quotes like “keyword”. Then look at the number of competitive websites at the top right hand corner. By picking a keyword with less than 50,000 competitors, you will have a greater chance to improve your ranking on Google and appearing on the first page in the organic searches.

Once you have done your research on the top search words as well as the competition that you will face, you can calculate the KEI, also known as the Keyword Effectiveness Index. The KEI basically measures how effective the keyword is and compares the number of searches for that keyword, i.e. the popularity of the keyword with the number of search results i.e. the competitiveness. The higher the KEI value, the more popular the keywords are and the better your chances of getting on the first page of the search engines with that particular keyword.

Take note that the KEI can vary over time. A good example is for the particular keyword phrase that I picked, “online MLM lead”. Previously there were only 2,400 searches as compared with 1,210 competitors. Today when I performed the check again, I was shocked to see the figure drastically changed. Keyword popularity dropped to 1,300 searches and competitors increased to a whopping 3 million!

You can also create more content with the same keywords. It is best to have a mixture of blog posts, articles that are submitted to various article directories, videos, Squidoo lens, Hubpages, etc… The more content you create with the same top Google search keywords, the higher your chances are of appearing on the first page of the Google search engines.

If you are keen to improve your Google ranking, check out the top search words and keyword popularity. Use any of the keywords tool and go ahead to perform the keyword analyzer. Your aim is keyword optimization and this is just the first step that will help you enhance your chances of appearing in the organic searches on the first page of the Google search engine.
